Back to work soon and it'll be time to miss my idyll time, again. Less time to spend with nature's exclusive works of art...sigh... Less time to be careful what I wish for, eh? Ha!

She (Mother Nature) helped me minimize flower costs. That was accomplished mostly with overwintered Creeping Jenny - right in its intended destination. I just added a few flowers and voila! Instant gratification. The 3 types of coleus are Redbean (at center), Lemon Twist and Kingswood Torch and they provide a textural backdrop. Gerber daisies are planted for their summer-long contribution and finally, this trough features tiny, "Firecracker" Zinnia. They'll grow more as they mature. I'm a sucker for these old fashioned posies.

Planted in this statuary, dubbed "Our Lady", is sweet alyssum and corkscrew rush. We called it the "Spike Lee do" but I think maybe "Whoopie" would be better. I hope the trellis realizes its climbing rosebush by summer's end.

The last pic is of overwintered baby's breath (no coddling required) with zinnia again. Sweet scale placed in front of our patio door, its blossoms just about ready to popPp. This is one of 3, the center being a chartreuse hosta, for contrast.

This will be a visual mouthful, so bear with me...Miss Bohemia bestowed upon Mamasakio a "Beautiful Blogger Award". Which begat, lucky me, the award from Mamasakio (who's also a fav art friend)... Anyway, I'm passing this slick sucker on to 15 new charmed, virtual winning authors.

These award winners weren't necessarily aware of my admiration, 'til now. Some create things I can not. Some are inspirational and I consume the big "Inspire" daily. Others are spunky, sassy and sooo supportive. (Insert lithsp here) Some have invaluable links and some post videos of works in progress (wip). Yum. Some are painters, assemblage or outsider artists, metal smiths and photographers. It's a fairly diverse list and I hope you are as enamored as I. I'll include a brief description of each but I encourage you to check them out. Don't miss their favored links too such as Mystele's. She includes a treasure trove of wip videos on her YouTube page. I spend loads of time drinking that knowledge nectar. Yes, self-confessed Mystele wip junkie here. I don't create works like Mystele but her technique demonstrations have helped me stretch for more depth in my art for which I'm very grateful. That fast friendship led to meeting Ronnie (son of a) Gun Tucker and so on. You get the picture.

The number "15" seemed like an insurmountable number but in retrospect, it's sorely lacking. Too many to choose from, it turns out. Let me just add, most of these bloggers are staunch cheerleaders for the rest of us lucky duckies so I hope you give them their due.

Raw and real. Dion Hitchings is a fierce presence. Why? One reason, sheer talent. It goes without saying that "outsider art" is a fav. With this artist - vivid color, bold strokes, captivating subjects and a fascinating imagination speaks with true "outsider" accent.

Dion's portfolio is packed with firecracker works, sometimes yipping at Picasso's heels. Take for example, the 7 deadly sins | envy the green dog. Be sure to check out "lust jimmy carter" on the same page. Hitching's strokes smack of genius as seen in lust's image, whose chosen subject is Jimmy Carter. Pres. Carter is decidedly beloved but poking a bit of decadent fun brought the image to another level.

And anyone experiencing a bad day can can relate to this self portrait

from Dion's self portraits 3 collection. Dion also takes on Tiger Woods and the 'nun with a bit of a mustache smoking'. Those series and the sunflower people…a poignant look at a death in the family…the self portraits and well, I could go on and on. You just have to see for yourself. I've been Zazzled. Just created 3 skateboards for my Zazzle store. Creating is fun again. Something new. First up at left, GOOD GIRLS DON'T TELL turned out pretty well. I haven't seen much for rocker girls in the skateboard genre so this is my contribution...sort of a Joan Jett approach, if you will.

Next is EXTREME CHIMERA, Losing Control. I've shown it here in both orientations because of its dual-viewing distinction. Merging my Etsy store ATC watercolor image, SP-EYE-DER, I-Webbed with an acrylic painting, DESPERADO, Swat Me worked out really well. Photoshopped and be-bopped, it's a fantastical approach.

SNAKE EYES AND MEN is, well, let's face it...a blatant attempt to lure in the male sector with a "bad boy" 'tude. I like the way these two images go together. Snake eyes for both the invertabrate AND those with no backbone. (sorry, couldn't resist)

This addition of a new product was loads of fun and definitely sparked my creative juices. There should be another word for "work" when it's nothing short of exhilarating. Can't wait to shake up the skateboard world again and, no, I won't be breaking my back on one. But, for those who do...I hope it's all "air" for you.

Sharing my merveilleux purchase! In fact, I'm wearing it to my son's wedding. Lucky, lucky me. Some purchases are made hesitantly but this one was an immediate knee jerk reaction. Follow her on Etsy and zibbet... we'll see many more of this style, I'm sure, but the vision of Mamasakio's Etsy offerings is enviable.

Love those rings too! Be sure to check out her shop. I think you'll appreciate the affordability too. Really nice person. It's always nice to spoil the "really nice person" in ourselves and not feel so guilty at the same time, right, girls?

Jolly Juli rocks. It goes without saying that custom artwear speaks to me. But these have been given a signature touch. Environmentally conscious, this artist is bent on providing original one-of-a-kinds for the distinctive wearer.

The creativity is wonderful, especially evident in the jackets. Worth the investment, definitely worth a freebie peek. Don't forget to check out the hats and bags too.

My advice? Hang it inside a frame when you're not wearing it. After all, it's a painting!

No religulous bone here. It's not Job(e), as in the bible but j-o-b, as in butter on the bread! Water in the well! Olive in the 'tini! Hop in the scotch! Okay, I'm getting carried away with exclamatory elation here.

Let me explain. Now that I got another contract job, I can get back to what drives me insane. Example: just the other day, I sat in an office awaiting my turn and fixating on a calendar in my line of sight. Of course, anything with even one letter on it is fodder for my critique. Lo and behold, I spied with my little eyes a horrendous boo-boo. The "G" in August was just plain awful, with a capital "A". It's enough to make a girl cur-aze-y!!!! So, let me at it once again. Unleashed, is this hound. So many incompetents out there and now I get to grab the flailing steering wheel again. I'll put my discerningly impatient and critical eye to good use. Sigh.

Sometime-clients are nice but regular, greenly capitalistic paychecks? Much mo' betta'. Temp gig time again and I'm NOT saying where! So THERE! SOME of us are protective of our leads. It's a crazy, wacky, competitive and extremely tiny field I work in, folks. While I love painting, designing and the occasional art direction...production art is supremely perfect for me. So, count me satisfied once again. Mm mmm. Got some sat-is-FACT-i-o-o-nnnn!

The real reason for this post though wasn't to gloat. It's to thank Johnny, for his support. I can just see him, beaming in his Bartles and James duds now. Who knew predictable could be so exciting? Muwahhhhhh! He's perfect. No kerning required and he never let a needy mate down. OH! That's lucky me. Did I say, "Sigh..." yet?

It's satisfaction with a Rolling Stones beat, beat, beat skip, beat-beat. See you in da not-so-red-column. (grin on face) Signing off with a timeless Jagger melody in the air. mmmm, satisfaction, mmm

L-O-V-E! THAT four-letter word. Or, f-e-l-t. Your pick.

Love, love, love these pieces by Inger Maaike. Her shop features some really crazy-wonderful stuff. Now, I've seen the laborious procedure several times but she's taken the processes to new heights. Case in point: the beautiful "Forest Triple-Lipped Vase". It's incandescent, ethereal quality makes it unforgettable. Brings new meaning to "brilliant"!

Further exploration reveals more excellent and even whimsical custom works. Crowns, hamster houses, slippers, sculptures and scarves in yummy translations...all in her shop.

I really appreciate the styles in felting she utilizes such as the wefelting techniques for merging contrasting colors. The traditional isn't outdone by the unique either. This poncho is just as lovely as it can be. AND, she takes custom orders. It doesn't get any better than that. Now, off to try and earn some money so I can do more than drool over them.

TUSH TUSH? Too cool a name not to use it as the title of this entry. Too cool a shop to miss. I know this cause I have a lot of Tali's works in "favorites" list. She's an Isreali art student who, in my opinion, doesn't need more schooling. Her works seem deceptively simple but they aren't. They're brilliant. Check the others out. Tali has a great future ahead of her. Isn't Sofia sweet? (this little girl is my fav)

Under My Skin... buh, buh, buh, buh

My studio in a studio got a present! Wheeeeee! Finally, I got something to save me from muhself! A custom "skin" for my laptop. Oh, what fun! Has anybody else gotten one of these done for their laptops? If so, post a pic, pretty please!!!!!!!!! Me wants to see your cool skin!

The trouble though, my friends, is trying to pick just one image. S'almost impossible. In olden days (speaks with crickety voice) a computer wasn't a necessary evil in the world of art. But, I've embraced it and now...voila, it speaks for me! Even bears my shop address across it though it's too small to read on the bottom of the computer at left.

Yes, that's a mess you see that haunts me. It changes day-to-day but is usually composed of the same ingredients.

There are tons of resources for "skins", I got mine from Schtickers. It's user friendly although I assembled this one first to upload, complete with headline and footer instead of working with their rudimentary font system...

I've always been grateful for the effectiveness of the skin I bought for my phone. So it was a natural choice to go with one for the laptop. Come on! You know you want to do it...

... what I love the most about studios is the insight it gives regarding an artist's passion. You could say that I'm nosy. I don't mind. Idea hunts are fun.

I look forward to swapping my studio with the guest bedroom. Buuuutttt! I can't do it 'til the spare bedroom is finished being painted, so sayeth the wise old owl. He's right, I know. Procrastination might be thwarted if a goal is at hand. The guest room, though it offers a kind of ensuite retreat for company with a bathroom handy, is just off the family room and has the sweetest window. SOOOO! I'm marking my territory! It has lots of artificial lighting so I can't complain but it's the cocoon effect it provides that delights. No one will know that I'm in that space, all hidden and hidden. Besides, I'm not a portrait artist and I don't mind how the paint goes on a little heavier and brighter because it's applied in artificial light. Wonder how many other people do this... hmmm I know it's frowned upon but until I win the lottery this is a solution. Besides, I've perched myself in front of the TV, armed with an art supply mess that is ever-present! Though I'm not anal retentive, I respond better to some sort of order when I want to relax. The more I long for it, the better to light a fire under my renovation job. I'll keep you posted.

Oh, yes, the French antique bust IS a little creepy but she just spoke to us!

More like whispered, "Come back. You know you want me!" We kept shopping at the Kane County Flea Market (our fav monthly event) and we just HAD to go back and rescue her cause...well, speaking frankly, she was just an outright nag about it. She's not in our master bedroom, my man thinks she's just too creepy to watch over us at night. But she does a great job of corralling necklaces. Cool beans, no? Also, the ledge will provide display space without making holes in the walls! Nice. Can't wait to move so I can make all kinds of holes! I miss the personality! And yes, that's an old-fashioned pump that sits outside in the sand cherry bushes. I keep forgetting it's there. NOTE TO SELF: remember to take it with you when you move!

Buh bye, GR. Hope you like your new home...HELLOoooo, stooodeee-o!

Strange Landscapes

MASTERFUL!

khcolor has named this beauty, STRANGE LANDSCAPE, NO. 7. Truth be told, I had a hard time picking just one to feature here. This won out for its depth and color. On khcolor's site are works created on a simplistic medium set. Heavy watercolor paper graced with acrylic paint. But the simplicity is clearly deceiving, so much so that it complicates the choice when realizing the beauty of this technique's vibrating rhythm. How to choose just one...I rest my case.

I've tried this method many times so I am particularly struck by the success of these paintings. The outcome isn't merely the result of lucky strokes. They're deliberately created to exhibit a mesmerizing likeness to encaustic paintings. If this contrasting color combo is not your cup of raspberry tea, khcolor has MANY more to choose from. The trouble is how to finalize the critical decision...good luck with that.

Barrel down Etsy's collection of shops but be sure to put on the brakes in order to swing open the shop door that yields these beauties. Oh. And in advance of your gratitude, you're very welcome!

Ta Da! From A to B(ikes). Roooonnnieeee zooms by with a posted post! It resides in Ronnie Gunn Tucker's shop, called BIDDY BRAIN WORKSHOP, but not for long methinks.

I just love her whimsical approach to a pseudo vintage poster. Bliss Bikes isn't just a great study in colors and composition. It has spirit. Ronnie loves how she feels on her bike and the levity of the subject's pose in the pictures is JUST THAT! She feels light and fast and cute to boot. Let the merry making commence under this sign and voila! You have your very own Bliss Rider to watch over your sedentary moments. Just teasing you with the allure of fun that awaits on the cutest two wheels around. I even love the work in progress as shown here. Hey, that's a graphic artist's compositor trick she used to create the painting.

Ronnie's other works are packed with commentary as well. I especially love her control-freak-guy holding his remotes! We all know one of them, huh, girls? Ooooh, I just looked for it to post here. It's gone now! See? That's how it goes...snooze, you lose (the good shift).

Anyway, blessed are the walls that help support the threads of this great canvas. Great work, Ronnie. May you never lose that happy slant.

Like quirk? My quirk doesn't sell as well as my conventional art but I shop for it. I certainly "heart" it the most. Recently I was very honored to be featured in the following treasury. You HAVE to check out these seller's works of art. 10 Body Parts is outrageous as is the other vintage ephemera at StoriesDivinations. Storie's product info is, thankfully, detailed. I already have some drool on the necklace there. DO check these edgy pieces out. They deserve our odd-loving admiration and not-so-odd green too.

S'pose you don't need anymore hints. It's Little Glimpse's turn. This latest featured artist is a genuine gem. Whether it's an opportunity to buy her beloved creations or to learn from her... she's non-stop inspiration. Mystele, not sure how she pronounces it, is a happy, accidental find. I first happened upon her sweet little sculpture and loved it so much that I featured her on one of my Etsy treasuries. Turns out it's her paintings and indomitable spirit that speaks to this artist's passion. I've watched what I believe to be, every one of her YouTube vlogs and videos. Part of what appeals is that there's not one pretentious bone about her. And her thoughtful approach and practiced techniques are sure to get you up off you "duff", as she would say. But, in the end, it's Mystele's characters "calling to her to bring them out", that'll charm you.

Folk art or not, the motivation and charm is what grabs. She should be a bonafide-summers-off teacher so as not to waste her insight. She should be a pampered/sponsored artist full-time so as not to waste a creative moment. She should be a... I wish I could grant her a de Medici-style patron. Well, I intend to glean as much as I can from my newfound friend. Her drive and willingness to open her studio and arms. God bless you, Mystele.

Flair... I say, "Ful-air!" Where did this start? The movie Office Space? Dunno. But this flair is fun. Check it out, Fellow Facebookers. Most people reading this blog are creatives. If you're on Facebook, as I am, check out a neat little app that's harmless and creative fun. No, I'm not employed or paid by Facebook! Send flair, create flair, hunt for flair. Yeeesss, it's a time waster. While I look for full-time employment, Flair is a creative outlet. HINT: if you add your web link consistently as the first part of your flair "name", it should prompt curiosity seekers. If they find and like your flair, they may even visit your web site. It's not bound to generate huge amounts of hits but it only takes a few.

I like that Mom won't yell. There's no artwork actually going on her wall at home. It's Facebook virtual art, after all. No, I don't still live with Mom! She does, however, still have the capacity to yell. (not that there's anything wrong with that... just as long as it's directed at someone else. That's always a peachy thang...)

There are naysayers out there braying about the capitalistic evils of "self-promotion". Insert horse's ass sound here. My artist friends are neither hugely successful nor rich by any means. We can use all the innocent help we can get! That reminds me of my favorite "funny flair" acquisition. "I'm not a bitch. I just have low bullshit tolerance." lof'nl Anyway, if this trick helps someone out financially, then I'll say, "NIIICE!". But, at the very least, it's another artist's tool. And besides, humorous flair lifts your spirits even when you don't create them. Add or send to your heart's content, my friends.

Celebrating the print processes... Time to visit Julie Belcher and Kevin Bradley. Hailing from Tennessee, these two command a large space and creative juices. By the size of this downhome flavor, it sure ain't hurtin' 'em none.

Their Etsy "featured seller" page reveals a rich tradition of respecting the spirit of culture and strength in diversity. Whether it's their Barnyard Butcher/Chicken Killer No. 1, an iconic symbol or Woody Guthrie, American Poet, in outsider styling...it's fantastic s__t! Now, I've always believed that the end result masks the complex yet wonderful process of hand-inked and hand-pulled artwork. With sure and sometimes dirty paws, the works of art, churned out in limited editions are each individually handled - creating a unique print every time. Skillful mastery is enviable especially when the results are vividly stimulating even when the ink is limited to just one color!

Visitors of Hatch Show prints in Nashville can see that HSP produces some of the most memorable concert posters around. (Hatch's direct link leads to a site that might be infected but you can still see samples on the previous link. Thanks, Ryman.) Though music is food for the soul, I find the subject of just music to be limiting. Life's tangible wealth of imagery demands the inclusion of variety. Lucky for us that YeeHaw has perfected that art - brandishing salvation in an ink can. At right, Kevin adjusts his Barnyard Butcher plate with a confident hand. Visit their studio and you'll find out why Julie, shown above, says they've "been kickin' ass & takin' names ever since" they started this ride. Gotta love that humor. You can feel it in their works and their words.

Now, there's no need for me to promote them. Nope, they're successful enough. But, I just have a need to crow about the pieces that inspire me and these pieces do just that. I pat myself on the back with awkward enthusiasm and tight ligaments 'cause letterpress fans are the just best type! Pun intended. There I go tootin' my horn again.

Enter Larry Watson for some serious artistic consideration. Whatever title he uses to describe what he does, it's sure to generate interest. Breaking from the traditional printing industry, his creativity has been unleashed in a humble barn. His glazed works include a bit of whimsy and loads of technique. In his own words, he "put the fun and funky in functional!" Larry's is an amazing body of work. He seems to be quite the world traveler too. Just back from Hawaii, he's graciously agreed to let me feature his art. Art that reflects worldliness. On Watson Studios Pottery website, you'll instantly see a piece topped off with a hat for a lid. Charm aside, his pieces are quality works created with the skillful hands of a seasoned potter. 25 years of seasoning!

Let's review 3 of my Watson favs. First is Mini Face Teapot Serenity. This is the one that first drew me to Larry's work. Pure delight. Especially for those such as myself who have a particular penchant for unique faces. Buy a pair and you've created your own split personality.

Second is the Curly Attitude Teapot. Finesse needn't lack detail. The curly handle and surface treatment are recurring themes in Watson Studio creations. Its appealing aesthetic adds that personal touch. Functional style, yes, but these works of art just ache to be showcased.

Lastly, is Green Masked Character Teapot. Within the details, the viewer is invited to his or her own interpretation. I'm thinking dreadlocks and a confident demeanor.

I'm drawn to Larry's other works as well such as his generous jardienes. Be sure to peruse his wealth of wares and gorgeous glazes. It's a great start to beginning that collection you've always wanted. Wonder what will catch your eye and what flavor you will see. Is it Oriental or earthy American, French or Indian? Your call. His talent.

I'm looking for ideas - always! Came upon an oil painting lesson. Really informative. I've NEVER tried oils. Can't even believe it myself. I'm curious about the trade offs. Acrylics dry quicker, I know. They give me the chance to keep progressing toward a finished piece of art. Quickly. There must be advantages that I'm just oblivious to. I know oils give you better control of paint mixing but is it worth sacrificing patience for? Maybe I'll have to try. See the lesson here.

Pomp, sistas! Pomp! With a bag on my shoulder, I have my crutch. Something to fiddle with and rummage through. The proverbial extension. Here, girlfriends, is one unique group. One sassy. One classy. And one smarty pants. S'for all of us. Enjoy!

This one's called the Annie Leather Bag. Sumptuous leather, generous proportions and fab construction. Yummy, buttery texture makes for serendipitous slouch. Last but not least, is this brilliant yet humbly-priced, Grocery Tote. Hey, genius AND reasonably priced? Sure, I could make my own but for this price, why would I? I truly can't stand the "green" bags that stores sell as recycling alternatives. Noble, they may be BUT snazzy they are NOT. Besides, it's advertisement for the store. Nobody's shelling out dough for me to be their advertising vehicle, thank you very much!!! I don't like plastic bags either so these are a savvy alternative. Self-taught artists crudely illustrate their stories and, in doing so, create hauntingly beautiful images. Fortunately for us, periodicals cover them. Raw Vision Magazine editors contribute to Ovation Channel's "Driven by Vision" series. Naturally I had to see what Raw Vision saw. RAW has, among other things, links to steer you in a myriad of directions. DRIVEN is an unbelievable television series, by the way. Genius might best describe it. Oh yes, Ovation's show, Art or Not, is fascinating too. For some, Outsider Art sparks debate. Is it art or not? What do I think? It's absolutely some of best there is.

Personally, I have my tail between my legs. I like to think of myself as an artist. I think that even the tiniest of artists, aka children, are brilliant so I guess I'm deserving of the title by default. Here's what I know as fact. There are many who humble me. Really humble me. Most have no training. They just possess the urge to create. I remember a long time ago, seeing one of my brother Pete's framed artworks which blew me away. Then he told me it was his daughter, Missy, who had created the scene in primary colors. It was unbe-freaking-lievable. Truly.

Exposure isn't limited to magazines or parent's walls. There's a wealth of links to whet the appetite. Looking for inspiration, I found this link, OutsiderArt.info. If you're not sure what this genre is - take time to check it out. Mikey Welsh's The General, shown here, is featured on Ioema Collection's ( International Outsider Exhibition of Modern Art) link on OutsiderArt.info. The beautiful thing is that he's just one of many talenteds featured there. Artists are also welcome to submit their works and some are then chosen to join the honored group. I hope Ioema keeps on keepin' on, in all its primitive honesty. A beacon for so many. Thanks, Ioema.

Make way for another favorite. Why in the world does anyone buy personal jewelry at cookie cutter stores when there's authentic, original beauties like these? Why?

"Oded & Ilan" handcraft these beauties. Now, in my books, Oded & Ilan's "ArtisanImpact" is an Etsy success story. I normally choose to herald the undersung on Gallerie Suze. But credit is due especially for those whose craft has credence. Besides, you'll find no other mere mortals within your sphere, wearing these originals. Isn't being bold worth the investment - especially when you're audacious enough to show everyone else up!

This first ring is an exquisite band, called "Springtime", that can only be found at Etsy store, "ArtisanImpact". This sterling silver is, as artisan says, "integrated 9K yellow gold ring inlaid 2 lab grown opals". I can just see it's chic on a long and slender finger.

My fav is the second ring called, "What Makes You Smile". Artistic interpretation with this sterling silver ring (embellished with garnet, citrine and blue topaz) is done in confidently, feminine sophistication. Oooh, how good it would look on my hand... Good thing it's only a digital image on this blog cause you'd see drool on it. Pardon me while I slurp.

"Zero Hour"
Zero Hour, the last ring pictured, is described as "sterling silver combined with 9K yellow gold" and "unisex". I say it screams, "my beloved!!!". What a perfect wedding band this could be. Guilty. Most of the time I do feel guilty. It's all in my head, of course. As Bonnie would croon, "I'm guilty, yeah, I'm guilty for the rest of myyyy yy liiiii iiife. How come I never doooo, what I'm s'posed to do? Nothin' I try to do ever turns out right..." Okay so, it's not true in my case but here's the joke. It's bad enough that my husband once told me that I'm so so easily guilted that I must have been born Catholic. (which I wasn't until I converted when we married)

Now I found out that it's the brain's fault. The human response center for guilt is located in the anterior part of the frontal lobe. It generates concrete chemical responses to emotional triggers. Mine must just be bigger than most people's. But then most of what's mine is... It can be a burden at times but I'll tell you a secret. It keeps me honest. I take comfort in knowing that I'm not alone too. Have you ever heard a siren and instinctively checked your speedometer? Thought so.

Bonnie, may you live forever and a day. You sings my thoughts for me. Clear as a "blues" belle.

Anyway, she sent me a link for a wonderful drawing video of a woman from the inside out, if you can imagine that. Inside out? Fascinating technique in new venue. Videos and line drawings. 'Ello out there. Clickety, clacking in January 2009 begins. 2009... Wonder how long it'll take to remember to write 2009 on checks instead of 2008. I also wonder how long the resolutions can withstand my weaknesses. Are good intentions good enough?

The to-do lists linger on - not wiped clean just cause the year began anew. Who can I see about that? Strings of Christmas lights push my procrastination button. I think that button's stuck. Like coppers on daily donut duty. Like seat belts that peek out of parked car doors. Like food stuck on the bottom of a pan, no longer Teflon-ized. That piece of garbage too ugly to clean before putting in a new bag... Like a too-short playlist set to "loop". I should start a pool on how long before I actually corral each and every last pine needle. Any guesses?

In spite of the lists, this year should prove to be a good one. How could it not? Obama's about to "trim" the Bush(s). And I don't even have to figure out which level of gray the unvirginal, dirty snow is. There's not much of it left. The extension cord in the driveway is visible now that it's naked - its snow coat melted away. That's good because the snow blower already ate a cord this year... wicked appetite, it has.

And I already sold a painting! I'll miss him dearly. Primary Man has made me happy. Buuut someone has purchased him and for that I'm flattered. I wonder if most artists have a hard time parting with their pieces... hmmm. Here's to writing the checks correctly, getting the work done, reigning in my excesses, checking my lists. And here's to the wall that will support my canvas. Bon Voyage, PM. See him waving? Sighing in shades of '09 gray. May it turn its grand, technicolor head. For everyone.

For breakfast on Christmas day my Sunny Boy committed to having a permanent ally. Son-shine and Lollipops. Niiice.

Sooo, that and a pillow. Comfort. Peaceful ammunition in a crazy, saturated world. My pillow. Hey, have you ever had your favorite pillow bunch up perfectly under your head without even having to rearrange it over and over? First damned time? Perfect pillow, perfect position. Kind of like validation in a warm hug. Baby steps in life. Necessary fuel. Congratulations, Sun and Lolly on your baby step - your warm hug. I hope it's 1,000 thread count and king-sized.

Beguile, the Encaustic Way

Another featured genius for you. BS ART STUDIO subhead reads " No BS, Just Awesome Affordable Abstract Art". Quite frankly, it's true but "ethereal" might have been more fitting. These panels don't demand definitive interpretation. I envy those who create encaustic paintings so beautifully. Her vision is our fortune. And she doesn't demand Jasper Johns prices!

Just what is encaustic? Shelly describes it this way... "Encaustic is the process of painting with wax, resin and pigment" The process, unlike basic oils or acrylics, paints a dimensional surface like no other. The wax seems to levitate opaque content in a chimerical way. The fantastical outcome is quite unexpected. To illustrate what I mean, here's the detail from one of the "mixers", as Shelby calls some of her offerings... Paint is suspended in the wax and is almost granite-like in appearance. Plus, BS ART's color spectrum is so varied that I can't imagine there isn't one that would grace your home beautifully.

Mixing and matching the panels really gives the buyer control of the end effect. Appealing as that idea is, be sure to consider other paintings at BS as well. The triptychs are stellar. Some of my favorites? SUMMER HEAT and LAZY RIVER. The difficulty of managing the end vision is where each encaustic artist is challenged. Once the heating process is finished, the painting hardens quickly but BS ART has mastered it beautifully.

At the risk of sounding like an addict, and I assure you that I'm not - unless you count art as drug, I dare to suggest these paintings seem representational of altered states. Her paintings seem opiate-like but without the toxic effect. Lucky for us. No B.S.!

Michael Ferris, Jr. is an accomplished artist whose works are... simply stated - brilliant. Recycled pieces give breath to his complex works of art. As he has stated (and I quite agree), these works are "bold patterns that recall Maori tattoos and Byzantine mosaics." The temperament and intriguing message of his work is one that seems to take aim at an intricate, 3D missive. I dare say that, were it possible, they're sculpted hallucinatory states captured in textural form.

Be sure to visit his site. We're incredibly lucky to be able to ferret out an endless source of artists' works. For some of us, these artists are an inspirational feast. Bon Appetit! Mr. Ferris' work is a veritable banquet for the eyes. Be sure to check out his "Rosemarie". She seems to be putting on an aloof demeanor but she still seems - well, you tell me.

The Art of Donation

I've a splendid idea. For Christmas (or whatever holiday you observe), a donation is an ideal gift. Especially for someone who doesn't really need anything. My donation recipient of choice is usually Habitats for Humanity (having lost my "family" home at a tender age, I feel an certain affinity for President Carter's vision). But most recently? I've considered Heifer International, World Vision and The Children's Safe Drinking Water Program. They're all outstanding.

Heifer's dollars seem to really stretch. A flock of chicks is just $20 bucks. Those chickens lay up to 200 eggs a year, feeding poor families a year's worth of eggs or allowing them the chance to earn a very real income. Also, there's the "Gift of Honeybees" for $30 that provides bees, hive and training. Did you know that bees are fast disappearing worldwide? Without bees, crops are done. No more to be had!!! If it's the "green" issue that hooks you. So "bee" it. The quote that got me though, in reference to one man's buffalo in a third world country? He said, "If I die, my family will weep for me. If my buffalo dies, my family will starve." ...so the "share" of a water buffalo gift for $25? I'm considering that one. Or the tree seedlings donation of $60. I'm a tree hugger. No doubt. The world could always use more trees to combat the greenhouse effect. But these trees foster healthy crops by preventing erosion on steep hillsides, feeding livestock and the land.

My inclinations toward Heifer.org aside, here's some info regarding World Vision. For world communities, a donation of $50 reaps the equivalent of $700 foreign worth of equipment toward stocking a school. Holy crap, people! Maybe I should say, "Holy Goodness, people." But, if you prefer that your dollars help others here in America, every $50 worth of World Vision's "kids in the USA" donation reaps a $350 exchange in necessities - clothing, diapers, that sort of thing. Wow. Wow. Woweeeeeeeeeeee.

I think our donation dollars will be spent on pure drinking water. My husband loved the idea and so do I. We take our drinking water for granted. Most Americans (because of our "socialistic government" program of Public Water and Sanitation) never even have to worry about it. I hope you'll take a moment to at least watch the video on Children's Safe Drinking Water. You'll see why we're so pumped, pun intended, about what a difference those donation dollars can make. It's truly phenomenal. Unbelievable really. Scary. Having watched the video, you'll see how unacceptably horrible it is to imagine life without pure water. In all of my horrible experiences, palatable (let alone safe) water was never a problem.

No, I'm not rich. I'm not a philanthropist. I'm not even employed. But, I've asked my husband to donate, in my name (in lieu of a Christmas present). One of the reasons I'm overweight (besides the man that loves to cook for me) is the hunger I experienced as a kid. You'll not find me complaining about food - if it's hot enough or if it's not tasty enough... ANY food, if you've ever been without, is an outright blessing. Having lost a home to fire, my experience explains my affinity for Habitats For Humanity and others like it. Yes, times are tough today. But not nearly as tough as they could be. Believe me. I've been there.

If you've ever been a waiter, you probably tip well. If you've delivered papers in the dead of winter, you probably give a bonus to the paper boy. Good intentions. It's usually experience that goes a long way in nudging a person toward taking concrete action. But, even if you've lived a charmed life, empathy or even fear can breed benevolence. Please consider giving for the holidays.

Gratitudes for Generosity

Gobble, gobble or as Mia (the grand-glory) would say, "magbogobmagob". Or something like that... God bless her intelligent tushy. As y'all know, Thanksgiving is not my favorite. Lost my foster Mom that very day. And she would have been so miffed. She never liked "upsetting the apple cart". And try as I might, I still dislike it. Sorry, Mom. But, my honey is still besotted with a day where feeding others is the name of the game. So it ranks right up there with our family. It's Dad/Pop's chance to make artwork of some poultry destined for our table. And he always delivers. Traditionally we try to get the youngest to eat stuffing and sweet potatoes. "Blechh", is the response. And the oldest holds out for a cigar with Pop and Drewski after clarifying what he hates most. Mushrooms or peppers. Why can't I remember that? I, with the other female constants in our nuclear family, are just basically thankful for the men in our lives. (thanks to me - yep, tooting my rusty horn.) Me for the man I love - Amy for hers and Lindsay for hers. Others enter into the scheme of things too. Most recent for me? My niece. And her hubby too. Thank you for your hospitality. I have never slept so soundly at someone else's house in my entire life. Not even her Mom's. And she is so important to me that it truly hurts.

Giving thanks is not ever a burden nor a problem. So many things belong on the pro side of life's lists. Here's to thanking those we treasure and those we've treasured in the past. The paintbrush of life is written in experiences too numerous to mention. Thanks to the baby girl I wish were mine, that niece. Thanks to her Mom, the best there is. Thanks to my man who never stops stewing about the people he loves and who considers stewing over the stove a pleasure to savor. A privilege, really. Thanks to my boys who have brought me more joy in any of their days than all their days of trials put together could hamper. Thanks to God for giving us all, not just artists, something to marvel over. When my sweetie pronounced, "Come see, there's a beautiful scene out the back window" - I knew it must be true. Crisp air, frosted beauty, sunshine oozing over everything in site. He was right, 'cha know.

God bless everyone and - oh yes, here's to watching "It's a Wonderful Life". After all, the mark of a life well lived is the traditions that bring us back to roost. Gobble, gobble. Saugatuck, Artist's Haven - Michigan Jewel

Saugatuck, MI has long been a favorite destination of ours. It's home to Ox-Bow, school of art, one of the delicious goals that exists on my list of things-to-do. I believe that my sister and brother-in-laws, Howie and Susie, first told us about this awesome place. Though I've yet to see the school, the city has our hearts in it's hands.

My man and I immediately think of going there when we want a take in a few romantic days. Been going there for years now and have done a variety of B and Bs and hotels, including Americinn and Ship and Shore (ugh). Last year we stayed at the Ivy Inn. Smack dab in the da middle o' town. On our anniversary weekend we usually see Saugatuck's Venetian Night and take in the craft show and galleries. Needless to say, finding parking there is like finding a jump ring in my shag carpeting. Fuggedaboudit! Ivy Inn is ideal and it's host was charming and the location can't be beat but the rooms are tiny. Some things just don't belong on our list of sacrifices to make. No sirree, Bob! (or whatever your name is...) Bigger is almost always better.

Enter Hidden Garden Cottages. Heaven can be found in the middle of town. Parking? No prob. Wonderful hosts, yummy accommodations and romantic influences abound. I hesitate to mention the place, for fear it'll always be booked up. The Tuscany Cottage (yes, a cottage) comes complete with a HUGE spa tub, poster bed, a kitchenette chock full of goodies, romantic music and movies. It just oozes sweetness. As the name intimates, it's decor is of an Italian bent - tastefully architectural with welcoming arms. Plus, almost everything is within walking distance. HGC really does offer privacy. It's a hidden jewel in the middle of a gem of a town. I especially love the journal entries written by all the lovers that came before us. Hey! Pun not intended! Tsk, tsk! We waited longer than usual to go on our yearly getaway. But the wait was well worth it.

I hope we'll always be able to make our pilgrimage to Saugatuck/Douglas' art galleries and teasing aromas that drift out of their restaurants. Among our favorite foodie places? Marro's, the Butler and we just discovered Everyday People. Magnifique!

We never leave without visiting artist, James Brandis' gallery. The art is wonderful but he really should consider marketing the menagerie of portraits that line the studio walls. His subjects of preference are usually nature vignettes and nautical scenes. But, it's the city resident's likenesses we love best. Unfortunately, the poster he had printed of those portraits (Faces of Saugatuck) is seemingly unavailable anywhere besides in his shop. Worth going to see (and buy). He supposedly said he'd do a painting of everyone from Saugatuck and those images keep him company, awaiting our return. His gallery isn't even listed on the Saugatuck.com website. Even though the site is a wonderful representation of Saugatuck/Douglas offerings, it's incomplete. No James Brandis gallery included, no complete list...

As for other special S/D attractions... You'll find Amsterdam (located on Bluestar Highway), in the specialty galleries section on that website. It's THE best collection of antiques, pottery and oddities that I know of. ANYWHERE! Bar none. Saugutuck is also the dune beach-swimmer and boater-recreation Mecca of Lake Michigan's eastern shores. The seasoned golfer will be happy to know that there's golfing available as well. Venetian Night celebrations encompass a dreamy, yet stimulating setting. With cutting-edge fireworks, who wouldn't love to sit by the water, people-watching while listening to the Butler's live band playing familiar tunes? And whether you ride in the quaint Saugutuck Chain Ferry, enter the old-fashioned band shell (Wick's Park Gazebo) or see the public restroom, you won't be disappointed. Yes, I said "restroom"! It's covered in a painting that replicates Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by George Seurat. The city is even dotted with phenomenal sculptures at every turn. Eye candy EVERYWHERE, people!!!

Thanks to my partner for life, for committing to celebrate "us" with our yearly Saugatuck, traditional trek. My world is all the sweeter for it. As for everyone else, if you're new at the art of romance or wear wrinkles hard-earned during years of sweet loving, consider the trip. We know you'll be hooked. Speaking of hooked... fishing on rented pontoons is fun too. Okay, okay... Just remember, if you visit, be sure to let me know what you loved best. Warning! Romance is in the air. Every so often life throws us a hint. When we listen, it can have euphoric results. The art of charm and the charm of gathered art awaits you in Saugatuck.

The Ultimate "Top Dog" Goes to Washington

Yes, I'm late in putting my two cents in about the election. It's been a hopeful and ongoing celebration at my house. Everything is wonderful and new again.

Are you really asking what this has to do with art? Hmmmph. It's the art of a skillful, brilliant young man that makes a hopeful future possible once again. Yep, we have to thank everybody who voted for and stumped for President-Elect Obama. Yes, he has a full plate of legal, civil, international and domestic social matters before him. Yes, I'm willing to be patient.

Lucky for us he's not the Red State good old boy that you would sit down and have a beer with. We elected him for his brains, thank God. We don't expect happy hour. We expect him to get to work and that's just what he's already doing. Hellloooooo!

I altered my artwork to compete in a contest. The almighty buck's superimposed on the drawing and it's just the topic that won him the nation's confidence. The economy. Money or the lack thereof.

God bless him and his girls (of course, Michelle is one of them). God bless us lucky Americans, even those who didn't vote for change... And God bless me. My birthday present is coming on inauguration day. Obama will pledge to protect and defend the Constitution with one hand on the Bible. The time for presidents who ignore and exploit the Constitution is OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whoopee for us all. Whoopee for us all. Is it January 20th yet? One thing is sure. Change has come to America! Insert smile from ear-to-ear right here!

My Life as "Grownup", Ouch!

Peter Max-like? Nah. But "My Life as a Grownup" looks much more relaxed than I am right now. If I have to be grown up, it should be as a relaxed and carefree grownup, donchathink? This piece has some obvious things to say and some not-so-obvious things to say.

Unemployment has done less than nothing to lighten the mood, donchaknow? However, I really do like meeting other Etsy and blog artists while pursuing my dream. Needless to say, I'd like success to be the thing delighting me right now. Oprah says, "Dream it and anything's possible." Honey, I'm dreaming so hard! If I did it any harder, I'd be as comatose as a ten year old hangnail! Maybe I should take comfort in the "the trip is what makes reaching the goal worth it" mantra. And, really. Not that my work should even be whispered in comparison to Van Gogh but didn't he become famous AFTER he died? Pooh. Time's a wastin'. I'd settle for Grandma Moses, if I could. (not that that's "settling") Think I'll stick to complaining about life in my trusty bubble.

These days Bush's irritating face is in mine far too often, I sigh in dithgutht. (yes, I lisp (lithpt) - "disgust") Bush is a boob on the boob tube. How appropriate. Is it just me or does he smirk more when discussing pressing matters? And was he a monkey in a former life???? Found Proof that I'm right. No, he wouldn't bug me less if I had a real job. He'd keep on bugging me. Thanks, Lindsay for my book that counts down the days until he's GONE, GONE, GONE!! I love, love, love that the book is almost finished. Yippee-ky-yay. (Wonder if spell check will catch that word.)

On to more domestic complaints:

There's spiders intruding on my sanity and my computer time by invading my personal space. Are there tiny spider maps with Mapquest directions to my exact location? I need to finish this blog entry!!
Dastardly dishes in piles resembling the Chicago skyline (the dishes are "still life" at its very worst). mmm, maybe that IS some inspiration for one.
My to-do list and bungling missteps just torture me. Too bad the command/z or contol/z keyboard function doesn't work for life's real messes.
And when did the sun start causing so much trouble? Never gave one thought to being the window shade monitor when I was working a real job.
The thing bugging me most right now? Our whiny ice cube maker that resembles a rude metronome as it relentlessly and loudly dumps fresh, half-made-half-moons. CRASH, THUNK, FWOP, it goes. It drives me momentarily bonkers. The initial shock of the noise is followed by me lurching out of my seat and a period of frazzled nerves. Me-thinks, hmmm, PTSD? It doesn't give me grief at night though! I pluck my hearing aids out - just for supreme control. That battle is conquered every day! And here I thought my days were dismal. Oh, waaaiiiiit. Oh well.

My job now? Looking for a job. Exhale. Woo-sah! Okay. There comes a time when "pessi-mistress" has to admit how lucky she is. Something'll come up soon and then maybe I'll write about the lack of time I get to spend in my too-sunny house with my on-demand ice cubes. Where else can I have a TV in nearly every room to keep tabs on smugly wayward Bush's final days in office? When I get a job, I'll longingly wish for more time to wish for more time. You know what I mean. Well, back to looking for an adult job and then the drawing board. Thanks for taking a break with me. See you 'round the water cooler. Walking many a mile has weathered these vehicles. CLODHOPPERS, a.k.a. oxfords, was drawn in charcoal with just a hint of quirkiness and distorted perspective to portray their warmth and imperfections. Mom lovingly saved these sturdy shoes, always wearing them to march in local parades. She proudly belonged to Polo's American Legion Women's Auxiliary. Having lived through World War II's trying days, Mom and other "town folk" took great pride in their patriotism, their servicemen and women and their hometown.

Things I miss about living in a small town full of oxford-wearing churchgoers? Everybody goes to those parades and the local sporting events outrank any TV shows. Farm boys, leaving chores behind, line up in formation on the field - ready to do battle with the "next town over". Don't have a ride to church? Floyd Wolfley could pick you up in his classic Oldsmobile that's seemingly stuck in 2nd gear's push button position. The charming cemetery on the north side of town tells a story of familiar residents known to its faithful visitors. And I miss the trusting neighbors. Not that my neighbors aren't to be trusted but there was a time when we really didn't obsess about locking the door. And if you ended up with a leg in a cast or had an operation? You were bound to come home to find the grass mown, your papers picked up and your mail brought in with supper in the kitchen. But don't count on finding out who your secret helper is necessarily. It's just the right thing to do. And Tommy, the delivery boy, could gladly come back if you don't have your $1.25 for the paper that you share with Grandma and Grandpa. Or how about those "dishes to pass" that made every potluck gathering a hit? By far the best feature of all? Living close to family and friends on well kept, tree-lined streets. There's always someone to play hopscotch or 4-Square with. And when things aren't good, those same friends step up to the plate with broad shoulders to cry on.

I sing the praises, albeit off-key, of quaint towns that predate road rage and stop lights. They lack the selfishness, cynicism and anonymity of big towns. Yes, I relish the embrace of my old hometown and its beloved familiarity. Representations of small town USA, these sepia-toned leather shoes exude personable warmth. Their soft patina and reliable platforms standing as ever-ready reminders of good times. Sad times. Sentimental times and small town values - Norman Rockwell-like in forgivable imperfection. Proof positive of their caliber, this comfy pair still hold a place of importance in my home and my heart. These tributes to simple substance and pure value seem to be unremarkable constants... but were built to last because they're made in good old U.S. of A. The shoes and the memories. sigh. CORRECTION HERE! Big mouth (uh, that would be me) needs to shut her piehole and git in the truck.

In my "B. Farmer" 10/07/08 post I incorrectly cited the dollar bill as an example of printing with dots. I should not have used the dollar bill as an example for printing with dots. That's engraving! DUH! What WAS I thinking?

Methods utilizing dots? Offset llithography and inkjet printing. Offset litho lays down dots of cyan, magenta, yellow and black in 4 separate press stages. Inkjet printing applies all four simultaneously. Okay, okaaay... I know. Yeessss! You can, in fact, print just one color if you like OR any number of the combinations, a.k.a. CMYK. Or with what we call "spot colors". Enough of that.

Word of advice. If someone were to try counterfeiting with their desktop printer, they'd likely be paying a visit to their local police station. The FBI is more like it. Some people and I won't name names, have tried that bonehead move. Why would anyone try setting up shop with their desktop printer? Lordy, Lordy. I wonder if the number of those attempts is greater when times are bad, like now? Or is it an equal opportunity bonehead move? Are there stats on this somewhere? Just looked for info about that. One article mentions the FBI's estimate of 100,000 attempts annually. Who knew? Think "Present Day" Barney Fife would catch someone passing fake-o buckaroos? Nah. He'd still be too worried about the bullet in his pocket, I reckon. But he's a fake-o buckaroo too so don't try it, you won't like it.

The real puzzler is how come you guys didn't call me on my dunderhead faux pas? Big Mouth says, "Tsk, tsk." Class dismissed.

FYI: there's no truck in sight so "Big Mouth" hasn't shut her piehole, as you can see. I reserve the right to keep on keepin' on. Insert raucous laughter here.

Tip Time by Sharpie

Tip? You've GOT TO CHECK THIS OUT! If you're a repeat visitor, you know just how much I love line art, right? Got a link from Kris Jacobs that totally blew me away. With any luck this Lexington Herald-Leader web link will stay online for awhile. I, for one, intend to check out this novel decorating technique often. It took care of tons of wall space for a mere, teeny tiny 10 dollars worth of Sharpies. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Be still my heart.

Kentucky.com features an even more indepth article about the wall scenes. I read a blog entry that said that the blog commentor had done some Sharpee art in his closet. He/She also said it was "white out art" after their mom painted over his handiwork. Incidently, there's a link on that same blog to Justine Ashbee's Sharpie art. Whoa man. This is some crazy shit. Wish the towel that I did (at left) were done in Sharpee. Charlie Kratzer and Justine Ashbee are my new heros. Thanks to fellow artster, Kris.

Coleoptera - A Friendly Hunt

Today's subject? Bugs. And wih this entry, today's painting of a scarab. They're reportedly good luck symbols but mythical connections aside, tons of artists are exploring "insectimania". Daily Painter, Susan Beauchemin, delves into unique styling with her WINGED INSECT painting. Her other watercolor artwork is outstanding too. Be sure to check them out. Absolutely stupendous work. She won't disappoint. Kudos too to PRINTMAN for his wonderful prints of a buggy sort. He's long been a favorite of mine.

Abundant choices blast away all insect-as-subject constraints. The estimate of "undescribed bugs" alone is said to be in the 30 million range. Oy vey! A staggering 90 percent of earth's life forms are bugs!!! There's about 360,000 kinds of beetles alone. Holy Jiminy Cricket!

My latest acrylic painting. SCARABESQUE is fun fantasm that I just uploaded for sale on my Etsy site. I took liberties with this rendition of a scarab. I told myself that I'd treat this painted piece like acrylic stipple art and then after I put down the base? You guessed it. I went the usual route with my wayward brushes. What is it about artists that keeps us from being disciplined enough to see a concept to fruition? Still, it's a happy accident that it turned out this way. Though I always hope to improve the quality of my work, this isn't a bad start. I promise to keep my next promise. Ooohhh... don't hold me to that; I might be in trouble here. FYI: I'll also be adding Scarabesque to Etsy in print format for a reasonably priced alternative.

Were I to have my wish, days would be spent searching for inspiration followed by days of "doing". Truth be known, sometimes I do. Guilty as charged when I'm oh-so-lucky. On one of those cyber journeys I came across stellar gestural, aka continuous line art, by Bridget Farmer. The bird link that follows is eerily simple and complex, all at once. Currawong, Australian Native Bird Etching In spite of its singular color, Bridget Farmer's "Australian Native Bird Etching" doesn't restrict its complexity and emotion. She's taken the brilliant style and set it to an etched print format. That process, in and of itself, is fascinating. Check out her blog for a sneak peek at how etching is done. stipple technique in Rapidograph Pen

Rapidograph time! The above "Buddy Guy" portrait is done almost entirely with a simple, old-as-the-hills approach. Stippling. Stippling is something of a precursor to newspaper printing. The use of dots - small or large; spaced near or far - creating varying tones. It requires patience but is extremely effective. Not to mention forgiving. It's mindboggling to see the complexity that can be achieved with mere dots. Case in point, almost any printed material. Even a dollar bill. (see correction on this - entry dated 10/11/08) That's engraving. Duh. Most images ARE, however, comprised of dots. Seriously. For those not familiar with the print process, take out the magnifying glass and see for yourself. Millions of dots - or NOT dots. Okay, enough of Printing 101. Back to drawing techniques. I can already see that this is gonna be a multi-entry blog subject considering the sheer volume of options. Are you a beginner? Interestingly enough, About.com has lots of links breaking down the methods. See http://drawsketch.about.com/library/blinktexture.htm for info on crosshatch, continuous, scrumbling, stipple... you name it.

The trick to continuous line is not lifting the pen or pencil before the drawing is finished. It really makes you think about your next step. No, there's no pen police but when adhering to strict technique, the rewards can be well worth it. My experiments in continuous line usually surpise me. "Anybody's Girl" (at right) is extremely simple line but sweetly efficient.

Combining stippling with continuous line or with scrumbling adds even more textural interest. My "Louis Prima" and "Muddy Waters" drawings illustrate this. Pun intended. "The Lip" (Louis) is actually my very first real attempt at a portrait in line! See? I told you it was forgiving! If you know how to draw a tic, tac, toe game then you already know crosshatch!

Desperately Seeking Green Art

I didn't have far to look. In lieu of posting my own art... this is a very special entry. This clipboard features Obama, in hopeful montage. Obama and his mother, Stanley Ann, inspired Kris Jacobs. The Star of Bethlehem, just above the word 'hope' symbolizes that very word. HOPE! Isn't the image of Obama as Abe Lincoln in a top hat fab? This piece includes S. Ann, for her courage, vision and for giving birth to her son. Her picture is located on the clipboard front at left. Thank you, thank you, S. Anne!

Kris' talent involves a time-honored process - using foundation, beautiful prints and the glue that merges it into a decoupage piece. Assembly of things old and new, is "Green Art", if you will. Though I know how to cut paper and have a keen eye for patterns and design, she outshines with this medium. L'arte del uomo povero, a.k.a. poor man's art, goes as far back as the 16th century. Artists began creating with whatever was on hand to give the illusion of luxury. Achievable grandeur without breaking the bank. And today it also helps keep things out of landfills. Bravo! Having posted a reaffirmation or two to get my blog going again, work will begin in earnest - or at least as much as any procrastinator can do anway. Gee, that sounded like a dirty word... Anyway, yesterday I joined ARTISTADAY. It's what I hope to utilize more and more. Useful inspiration and in this case, exposure for the not-so-commercially successful and struggling arteeest.
Also, I'm plugging away on images. "Sexy Pear" is an original acrylic of mine that's popular with family and friends. So, I decided to add it for sale as a digital print (11"x14"). You can see it at my Etsy site, Gallerie Suze It's also available as a giclee on canvas. Almost the real thing, you know. Prices to come. Pears are sexy for their generous curves but this illustrates a pear's hidden appeal as well.

Having purged the old contents of my "CMYK'd in Tornado Alley" blog site, I now welcome new visitors to a revamped arty blog, for bloggin's sake!
